Five Day Walks around Glenorchy

A walking haven for all fitness levels

All around Glenorchy, you will find an abundance of walks and walking tracks. Whatever your fitness level and available time, there are walking tracks that will suit. Here’s our top five recommendations for day walks to do in the Glenorchy area.

Walking the Routeburn Walking Track

#1 The start of the Routeburn Track

This has to be on the list, as the Routeburn is one of the Great New Zealand Walks. If you don't have a few days to tramp the whole track, then at least experience the start with a 4-6 hour walk - you won't be disappointed, and you’ll feel like you’ve at least experienced one of the very best Great Walks, rich in native flora and birdlife.

From the Routeburn Shelter Hut, take this popular day walk up to Routeburn Flats Hut, or if you feel you would like more of a challenge then the extra 3 km onwards to the Routeburn Falls waterfall is well worth a visit.

#2 Walking in Paradise

Any walk that takes in Paradise, has to be worth doing! As well as great photo opportunities this walk takes you through some wonderful countryside within the Paradise property where there are approximately 4 km of wheelchair accessible tracks established by David Miller in 1998. This is an easy enjoyable walk taking in some incredible views.

From the Paradise Road in the Dart Valley take a left past the Arcadia House. Care must be taken not to disturb people staying in the huts on this 300 acre area and a donation will be gratefully received to help with the up keep of the tracks in order to make this property accessible for everyone of all abilities.

Fab 4 Walk- Adventures in Paradise

#3 Mount Alfred

Nestled between the Dart and Rees River valleys is Mount Alfred, a 1,375-metre peak that simply begs to be climbed. It’s a six-hour climb to the top, but this hike is unique to many in New Zealand in that it contains a fantastic mix of hiking through the dense bush, with some scrambling near the top along with panoramic views from the summit.

This isn’t for the faint-hearted and should only be attempted by those with an average or better level of fitness.

#4 The Glenorchy Lagoon Track

From the Glenorchy waterfront this gentle, well-formed track follows the flood bank around the Rees River and Lagoon Creek and back through the Glenorchy golf course.

A great place for a picnic with strategically placed tables and benches overlooking views of Mt Earnslaw. Glenorchy Lagoon Walkway offers excellent opportunities to view bird life, including black swans, paradise ducks and Canadian Geese as the boardwalk traverses the wetlands.

This is a great walk with kids and for those less sure on their feet, and a great way to soak up the magic of Glenorchy.

#5 Invincible Mine

This awesome 3 hours return walk introduces you to the rich mining heritage of the area. Part of the Otago Goldfields Park, the walk gradually works its way up giving you wonderful views of the Rees Valley and Mt Earnslaw.

From Rees Road, this well-formed historic walking track is for people with moderate fitness and abilities. You can see remains of the water wheel and a unique set of seven berdans (large, revolving cast iron bowls in which the ore was ground) are also visible. Miners built the track in the early 1880s, but you can now enjoy it without the sweat and tears they invested.

We are proud of where we are based and know that Glenorchy is a special place that has to be visited to be believed. If you are planning one of these walks then check out our wide range of accommodation from quad rooms through to private chalets and make a real weekend of it, we have something for everyone!
