About this event
Experience Antarctica in Your Backyard: Antarctic Film Festival Tours the South Island
An unforgettable evening of storytelling from the coldest place on Earth. The New Zealand Antarctic Society is proud to invite you to a curated selection of captivating short films from the heart of Antarctica.
This engaging programme blends stunning documentary footage, curated by award winning filmmaker Anthony Powell, that reveals the continent’s stark beauty, unforgiving conditions, climate change, and penguin antics with stories captured by inventive and funny entries from the Winter International Film Festival of Antarctica’s 48-Hour Challenge, an annual showcase of creativity and resilience from those who winter-over on the Ice.
Before the movies, Al Fastier will take you on a journey of Antarctic heritage conservation for which he was awarded a New Zealand Antarctic Medal (2025). As Programme Manager for the Antarctic Heritage Trust, he was responsible for overseeing the conservation of the huts used by early explorers such as Scott and Shackleton at Cape Evans, Cape Royds, and Cape Adare.
